The Challenge:
After winning the bid to host the Special Olympics World Games for the first time in the Middle East and North Africa in 2019, the Abu Dhabi government had to find an innovative way to create a digitally driven solution. A solution that would be easy to use, provide reliable information and guide athletes, visitors, and staff, as well as volunteers throughout the eight-day sporting event. In addition to this, a key function of the app had to be to publish the Games schedules and daily sporting results, providing access to thousands of remote followers and sporting enthusiasts that joined virtually from around the world.

The Solution:
As the technology partner and system integrator, Injazat developed a solution that would allow visitors to download the Special Olympics World Games app, featuring a number of functions including:

Visitors, athletes, staff & organizer functions:

  • Real-time schedules and results;
  • Athlete, sports, and team information;
  • Awards ceremonies schedule;
  • Venue information and location linked to Google Maps;
  • Venue indoor navigation (halls and facilities);
  • Track mobile user’s geolocation (Crowd management through heat maps);
  • Access to volunteers shift schedule;
  • Live feed of news and social media;
  • Voice language translation;
  • Chatbot (Virtual assistant);
  • Link to Abu Dhabi/Dubai tourism;
  • Link to the Medical App (used by MOH);
  • Link to Trip Tale App (user captures moments of the event);
  • Sponsors information.

Visitors, athletes, staff & organizer functions:

  • Instant communications alerts for event updates;
  • Notifications for health and medical checkups for athletes.

The Result:
Over 7,000 athletes from more than 170 countries, and tens of thousands of users downloaded the app worldwide during the event that was held in March 2019.
